I already filed my taxes and got a 1099 R form in the mail a few days after, what does this mean, do I owe money?

Never got anything like this in the mail before, but I do remember that I rolled over my other 401 ks from my other jobs last year into one. Could that be it? and what does it mean for my tax return?

That could be it.   What code is in box 7?   Like a code G or 7?  Does it have any withholding in box 4?

Once the IRS opens filing for amended returns in late February, you'll likely need to amend your 1040 tax return to reflect the taxable/reportable income items you received on form 1099-R. (Lean more: TurboTax - What is Form 1099-R? Distributions From Pensions, Annuities, Retirement, etc.) According to the individual forms lookup tool, Form 1040X Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return will be available for both print and e-file on 2026-02-25. In the meantime, do not make changes yet in TurboTax online.

If the IRS rejects your e-file submission, you may be able to make any necessary changes and re-submit after including all your tax forms.

If the IRS accepts your e-file transmission (and remits your refund to your bank account), then you should still wait to enter any additional information into TurboTax until Form 1040X is available; this form requires a clean copy of the 1040 to be attached, which you don't want to edit accidentally.

In the meantime, consult your tax advisor about whether your 401(k) rollovers on Form 1099-R represent a taxable or reportable event which must be included in your 1040 or 1040X return. Note - 1099-R is already reported to the IRS and included in your tax return transcript; this means that failing to include it in your individual tax return could trigger an automated notice from the tax agency. Again, your situation may be unique depending on the nature of your withdrawal/rollover transactions.

so the taxable amount on box 2A is zero dollars. and the distribution code for box 7 is G. while a federal income tax withheld on box 4 is blank.

Distribution code G on your 1099-R indicates that your proceeds was rolled over to another qualified plan. Your 1099-R shows $0.00 as the taxable amount in Box 2a.

The 1099-R may be reported on an amended income tax return.  Amended tax returns should be available soon.  See forms availability here.
