I already e-filed my taxes and Judy got another one of my humans W2’s we completely forgot about. It’s $1200 in wages. Do I need to amend this? And if so how?

They were submitted a week ago and are already approved

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner.  The IRS does not allow you to take it back.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.”  The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail  it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally.  You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself.  Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

The Form 1040X you need becomes available in late February,  But wait until your return has been processed.

As per xmasbaby0 above, you must wait until your return is fully processed and you have received your refund before preparing and e-filing your amended tax return.

Once your tax return is fully processed, to amend your return using TurboTax Online you will:

  1. Log in to your TurboTax account.
  2. At your homepage, look for "Your tax returns & documents" and select the correct tax year.
  3. The you will select the "Amend (change) return" dropdown and in the dropdown choose "Amend using TurboTax Online".
  4. Follow your prompts, and select your reason for amending.
  5. Make your corrections (add your W-2(s)).

Make sure to review your return before filing and then  follow the prompts to e-file or print and mail Form 1040-X to the IRS.

You will be able to track your amended return using this link  Where's My Amended Return? on IRS.gov.

I have a similar situation with a late 1099 after I e-filed using TurboTax Premier Desktop. Can I e-file the amended return after I get the refund or do I need to mail it in?

Yes, you will be able to e-file your 2025 amended tax return with TurboTax since you e-filed your original return with TurboTax. You won't be able to file an amendment until your tax return is fully processed and you receive your refund or your balance due is deducted from your account.
