How to amend my 2017 return

I received a CP2000 notice for 2017 tax year and noticed that I did not report one of my 1099B forms (filed my taxes online in 2017). I completed my amendment and I owe ~$1K to Federal (at least that's what I read on the first line of page two of my amended return: Your federal amended tax return shows you owe $1,357.00).

What confuses me is Form 1040-ES Payment Voucher 1, (and 2, 3): They say "Amount of estimated tax you are paying by check or money order . . . . . . . . ." is 15,263.

Did I do something wrong?

Also the pdf file is 76 pages long: Do I need to print/send all the pages to IRS or just the few pages for Form 1040X?

Thanks in advance,

How to amend my 2017 return

The 1040ES slips are estimated payments for Next year 2019 not your tax due.  Or actually if you are amending 2017 they would be for 2018 which is now over so just throw those out.

You have to include a check for a tax due when you mail the amended return.  Do not use any vouchers that may print out.

Make  sure the original refund or tax paid shows up on the amended return.  You can confirm this by printing your amendment and looking at the 1040X. Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund.  If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16.  If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.

just send the 1040X and any pages that changed from the original like schedule D.

Hello,

To help understand your CP2000 letter please visit the following website listed below.

 https://www.irs.gov/individuals/understanding-your-cp2000-notice

As far from Form 1040-ES please double check here is a link to make sure you did everything correctly.

https://bench.co/blog/tax-tips/1040-es/

Those Estimated Vouchers 1040-ES are Not Mandatory.  They are Not sent to the IRS and are for your information only.  TurboTax calculates those based on this years tax return.  So, If you feel comfortable about not owing way too much next year then you can just Ignore those vouchers.  Like I said the IRS does Not get a copy.

The issue is will you Owe less than $1,000 to the IRS in taxes Next Year.  Please see this IRS Topic 306 http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc306.html for a more in-depth answer.

And to be on the safe side I would send all in to the IRS.

How to amend my 2017 return

Actually I don't owe the IRS. They owe me. I accidently did not include a W2 on my return because I thought I only had one. Someone did an ammendment but it was incorrect.

So now I have to do it all over again & I can't get a 2017 1040X form. How do I do that?

@Anonymous

It is not clear just what you did.  What does this mean?

"I filed my return in mm a 2018 when I was supposed to file a form for 2017"

What is "in mm?"  Do you mean you used the online program for 2018 and completed and filed a 2017 return?  If you did that it was a big mistake.  The current online software can only be used for a 2018 return, and the year 2018 on everything should have been a big clue that you were doing something wrong,  TurboTax would have no way of knowing you were entering 2017 income.

To correct this you need to file an amended return for 2018 and put your 2018 information into the 2018 software on a Form 1040X.

A 1040X cannot be e-filed.  It must be printed and mailed.  It will take about 3-4 months for the IRS to process an amended return.  It is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it, like UPS or certified mail, so you will know it was received.

Wait about 3 weeks from mailing and you can check the status of your amended return:

And in order to file 2017 correctly you need to download the desktop version of 2017 software and prepare the 2017 return again using the right software.  Then you print sign and mail the 2017 return.  It cannot be e-filed.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2017 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2015, 2016, or 2017 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.
