The IRS is sending out letter 6419 to you. It will show the amount of advance child tax credit that you received during 2021. Enter the information from that letter carefully. The remaining amount of CTC that you can receive will show up on line 28 of your 2021 Form 1040.
As xmasbaby0 noted above, you will receive Letter 6419 with this information.
Enter your Advance Child Tax Credit information from IRS Letter 6419 here:
The IRS has allocated your advance payments in some manner, it might have been half to each spouse, or all to one spouse, or something different. You can look up your IRS account online or wait for them to mail your letters.
At the risk of adding confusion, the IRS will aggregate your advance payments on form 8812. So if you filed married filing jointly for 2019 and 2020, and plan to file jointly for 2021, and your dependents have not changed, then it doesn't matter how you split the advance payment amounts as long as the total is correct. However, for any other situation (change in marital status, change in dependents, change in filing status) you should list your payments individually according to how the IRS allocated them, which means waiting for the letter or checking the IRS account online.
FYI ... bottom line is you must enter all the advance CTC you (& spouse if married) got last year. The form 8812 only reflects the total so it really doesn't matter how you enter it in the program as long as the total on line 14f is correct . The program splits out the payments between the spouses because the IRS letter 6419 does it that way ... they tried to not confuse the user.
