How long does the IRS take to settle amended returns? After I received refund, I discovered an error and filed amended 1040. Need to pay back some of refund.

Your amended return will take up to 3 weeks after you mailed it to show up on our system. Processing it can take up to 16 weeks.  If you owed the IRS on an amended return, you should pay the amount shown on the amended return when you filed the return.

You can pay any taxes due the IRS on their website.  See the following:

Since you needed to pay on the amended return don't expect them to process it for 6 months or longer ... returns with refunds on them get priority at this time of the year.
