How do you change the filing status on the state return?

Turbotax made it married filing jointly like the federal return but married filing separately on the same return saves a lot of money in my state.

How do I prepare a joint federal return and separate state returns?

It depends on the state you are filing, some states require that you use the same filing status as you did on your federal return. If your state allows it, we recommend that you use TurboTax Desktop to do this.  You will need to create a mock return as married filing separate for each person ( you will not need to file these returns), and then create a state return for each that you will have to mail in.   See the following TurboTax help article for more information:
