If your 1099-G for a State Tax Refund is not the amount you actually received, you can contact your State Dept. of Revenue to find out why.
Most commonly, the amount on the 1099-G is higher for three reasons....both are properly added back $$:
1) You made checkoff donations to state charities when you filed. Those $$ are added back, but can be used as charity donations on the 2022 Federal tax return, if you happen to be able to itemize.
2) You had some out of state purchases you entered for 2021 and were assessed some "use" tax or sales tax on those items. Those tax amounts are added back too.
3) You applied some of your state refund to 2022 state taxes. Those $$ are added back too, and treated as if you received the $$ but then paid some estimated taxes for your 2022 tax return.
