How do I know I am only paying federal taxes once?

I filed my taxes, and I owe Federal taxes. It looks like it is being taken out of my state taxes as well, which is what I want. Then I can keep whatever is left over. When I was finishing my taxes, it asked when I want my federal taxes to be taken out to pay them. I put in a date. I now need to know if I am paying into Federal taxes twice or if they will do one or the other.

No.   Your federal tax cannot be paid from a state refund.  NEVER.

Your state tax due cannot be paid from your federal refund.

It is not possible to pay your state tax due from your federal refund, nor is it possible to pay a federal tax due from a state refund.  The federal and state treasuries are completely separate from each other.  You may have seen a TurboTax summary of your federal and state amounts that confused you into thinking one was “paying” the other.  It is not. The ONLY thing you can pay for from a federal refund is your TurboTax fees if you chose that option.

If you have federal tax due you can pay by mailing your payment with the 1040V voucher, (which has the address printed on it, having the payment taken out of a designated bank account, or you can pay directly on the IRS website.

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

State taxes owed cannot be paid from a federal tax refund.

In the File section of the program if you had both federal tax owed and state taxes owed, you were requested to indicate how you wanted to pay those taxes individually, federal and state, either by mailing a check or by direct debit from your bank account.

Look a the Filing Instructions page for the federal tax return and the Filing Instructions page for the State tax return to see how you selected to pay each of the taxes owed.

To access your current or prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.

This will take you back to the 2023 online tax return.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Then click on Print Center. Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.

to avoid confusion, teill TUrbotax "I'll mail a check"

then make the payment yourself by check, or online at the IRS "Make a payment" page.
