Because Tax Year 2024 is closed for e-file, you will need to print and send your amended return to the IRS on paper.
On the left-hand side of TurboTax Online, select Tax Tools and then select Print Center to print your 1040X (and amended state return, if applicable).
Here are the instructions (How do I amend my federal tax return for a prior year?) to make sure you are working on the amended Form 1040X:
TurboTax Online
On the Tax Home screen, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and select the year you want to amend.
Select the Amend (change) return dropdown, then Amend using TurboTax Online. If you're told to amend your return via TurboTax Desktop, follow the steps for TurboTax Desktop instead.
Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return.
TurboTax Desktop
Open the TurboTax Desktop software for the year you're amending. For example, you must amend your 2024 return in the 2024 version of TurboTax.
Under Need to Amend a Filed Return?, select Amend a Filed Return.
Select Amend for the return you need to amend. If the return you need doesn’t appear as an option, select Find a Tax File to find and load the return.
On the Do you need to change anything else screen, select Update next to the info you need to change.
Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return.
Don’t forget to select Save As (or Duplicate on Mac) from the File menu when you save a copy of your amended return. This will preserve the tax return you originally filed. Give the file a different name from the original, like [tax year]_amended_tax_return_Smith.

I am having the same problem. I go to amend online, I made the changes, and went to tools and print but the option of a 1040-X form is not there. Only the option to print the return with change as if it was the original. Is there no way to get this form? I’ve spent about 3 hrs trying to use the desktop and online version with no solution. How do I get TurboTax to make my updates on a 1040-X form, so that I can print it and mail it? Since sending it online seems to not be an option.
The 1040X is not available now. It won't be available to efile or print until 2-18-2026.
it's the 18th and still can't amend 2024 taxes online. only edit the old 1040, not the 1040x
The target date for preparing the amendments this year is 2/25. Check back after that date to prepare your amendment.
I have similar issue, I was able to populate and prepare 1040X for 2024 but when I tried to transmit, I got a message saying "Your Transmission Didn't Go Through, TurboTax was unable to send your return to the Intuit Electronic Filing Center, for the following reason: Transmission failed: The Intuit Electronic Filing Center is closed for the 2024 Personal Income Tax filing season. Nov 15, 2025 was the last day to file returns electronically. Please file your return(s) through the mail......", also when I was trying to transmit, I also got message saying the signature date needs to be between 1/1/2025-12/31/2025. I am using Mac desktop turbotax 2024 and I read somewhere I should be able to e-file amended 2024 federal return as long as the original return was filed through turbotax e-filing which I did. I am aware that I can mail this return but the return is massive and I strongly prefer e-filing, any way I can still e-file 2024 1040X in 2026?
In the FILE section, make sure the Filing Date is the current date. Although you were able to Efile your original 2024 return, you may not be able to Efile an Amended prior year return.
There is no rush to file your Amended return; it takes up to 12 weeks to process, whether Efiled or Mailed, and you have up to three years to file an Amended return. It doesn't catch up to or correct your original return; it is processed separately. Wait until the 2025 filing season is over (or almost over) before trying to submit an amendment.
