1) You cannot use your 2017 software for your 2016 taxes. You have to buy/download/install and and use the 2016 software to open your 2016 tax file. Once you complete working on your 2016 tax file with the 2016 software, then you will have to print it out and mail it in....spend a few weeks making sure it is all OK....you don't want to see an error 3 days or a month after mailing it in, and then deciding you have to amend what you already mailed in.
.............Repeat......make sure you buy the 2016 software:

2) What the 2017 software starts with is your old 2016 file, but that only brings in some prior year (2016) information and some empty forms to work with....SO.....if you DO make any significant adjustments to your 2016 tax file in #1 above....you will need to start ALL over with a new 2017 tax file (and transferring in your final 2016 data from #1). SO don't bother with 2017 until your 2016 file is completed.
3) When you do get around to e-filing your 2017 taxes (next March or so), you will have to use either an e-file PIN (if you have one), or you will need to indicate a 2016 AGI of "0" (zero).....you need to use the 2016 AGI of zero because you did not e-file your 2016 taxes. Yeah, your 2016 AGI is not likely a zero, but because you mail-filed it late...that's what you will have to do to e-file 2017 taxes.
