How do I e-file the original 2024 return corresponding to an amended return that was filed by mail, which the IRS will not process without receiving the original return?

I have contacted IRS who confirm that this is possible. I am unable to reach Intuit customer care by phone because the automated system is inadequate to look up my account.

You will have to mail your return.

You can't efile 2024 or prior original or amended returns.  But if the IRS  didn't get your original return you don't amend it.  Just fix the original return and mail it.  

How did you amend it?  Using the Online version or the Desktop program?  To get back the original return you would have to open the amended return and delete the 1040X and take out any changes and put your return back to the original return.  Then print and mail the original.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

the IRS allows e-filing of prior years but Turbotax doesn't after the extended due date of the return (10/15/2025 for 2024 retunrs)
