How do I claim my 17 year old after I filed my return already?

He has a job and is claiming himself. But I paid for everything and he lives in the home with me. I’m not sure what I need to do to file a amended return

Since he is 17 and doesn’t provide more than half of his support and he lives with you he must click the button on his return saying that someone else can claim him. You can claim him by filing an amended return but wait until your first return has been processed and any refund or tax liability has been settled.

Did your 17 year old already e-file and incorrectly say that no one can claim him as a dependent?   At the age of 17 -- he CAN be claimed as your dependent.   if he filed first, your e-file claiming him will be rejected and you will not be able to e-file this year at all.  You CAN claim a 17 year old child as your dependent, even if he had a job.    You will need to file by mail now.  Claim your child, print, sign and mail your return and have your child amend his return after it has been fully processed.  He needs to go to My Info and change the way he answered the question as to whether he can be claimed as someone else's dependent.

Here are the rules.     Your 17 year old is a qualifying child.

WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?

You can claim a child, relative, friend, or fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2023 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

Qualifying child

  • They're related to you.
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Qualifying relative

  • They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They lived with you the entire year (exceptions apply).
  • They made less than $4,700 in 2023.
  • You provided more than half of their financial support.

When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them. There may be other tax benefits you can get when you claim a dependent.
