How do I amend my stimulus return to add my daughter's socials security number to receive the extra $500?

If you originally used the non-filer site to get your own stimulus check return to it and you can add your dependent child to get the $500 stimulus for a child who was under the age of 17.  Today  (September 30) is the last day to do that.

There is no such thing as a stimulus return.

You either filed a 2019 federal tax return, Form 1040, or you did not.

If you filed a 2019 tax return and need to change the tax return that was filed and accepted by the IRS then you will need to amend the tax return.

An amended tax return, Form 1040X, can only be printed, signed, dated and mailed by you to the IRS or it can be e-filed if your original tax return was e-filed. The IRS will take up to 4 months or longer to process the amended tax return. Wait until you have received the tax refund or the taxes owed have been paid and processed by the IRS before amending the tax return.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a 2019 tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-topics/help/how-do-i-amend-a-2019-return-in-turbotax/01/123845...

If you were not required to file a 2019 tax return then go to this IRS website for information on filing for a stimulus payment with a dependent child under the age of 17 - https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here

How do I amend my stimulus return to add my daughter's socials security number to receive the extra $500?

I get this strange message below. I checked status and it says nothing has been filed. I double checked SSNs and everything is correct. I do not have any reason to believe there has been any identity theft of any sort!

This return has already been filed
  1. This return could be in process or has already been accepted by the IRS. Check your e-file status using the "Check E-File Status" button at the top of Step 1 or Step 2 of your return.
  2. Check your return to make sure your Social Security numbers are correct.
  3. This could be an indication of a tax-related identity theft. If you continue to receive this message, you should take these steps:
    • Visit irs.gov to complete Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit.
    • Print and mail your tax return, including the Form 14039 and copies of state or federal identification.

You cannot use the non filer site twice ... so if you have already used it to report your kids info already you cannot do so again.   Read the rules here :  https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here

If the extra $500 was missed off the first "stimulus return" you filed then it is now too late to mail in an amended return to get the extra money now ... an amended return must be mailed in and since amended returns are taking 4 - 6 months to process you will need to apply for this credit on the 2020 return you will file next year.

If you used the IRS non-filers website and now are trying to e-file a 2019 tax return, note that using the IRS non-filers website you essentially filed a 2019 federal tax return.  So that the IRS already has a 2019 tax return with your name and Social Security number.  Another 2019tax return with your name and Social Security number cannot be e-filed.

Again ... you cannot use the site if you have already filed a 2019 return ... now you must wait for the 2020 return to get that money.

How do I amend my stimulus return to add my daughter's socials security number to receive the extra $500?

I think I understand that I submitted on turbotax a no return for 2019 but that is actually the same as submitting a return so on the non-filer website I cannot complete the application. However today is the last day to file to receive the $500 this year. The instructions for amending a return require me to print and send by mail. What should I do?

You will claim it on your 2020 return next year.

If your child was born in 2020 you will receive any additional credit to which you were entitled when you file your 2020 taxes.  See question #4 here

@hunterjaimbaby

Yes ... using the TT non filer site was the same as using the IRS non filer site ... so you cannot efile an original return now.   What you would need to do is mail in an "amended EIP " return  HOWEVER that is a waste of time as those are taking 4 - 6 months to process so you will not get the money by the end of the year when the advance credit will cut off.

See this TurboTax support FAQ on how to proceed in this situation if you still want to try mailing on in ... - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-topics/help/stimulus-how-to-file-your-return-after-getting-rej...

SO  all you  really CAN  do now is wait until the 2021 filing season opens and file a 2020 return to get the credit.
