I don’t understand why it has box 6a checked if I filed as dependent and have the box checked for it.

If you marked the box and indicated that someone else can claim you as a dependent, you filed as a dependent. The tax forms changed a lot for 2018, so I am not sure where or what form you are seeing line 6a on. I think you may be looking at a Form 1040 from 2017 or before.
On the 2018 tax form, look underneath your name at the very top - There should be a checkmark next to ''Someone can claim you as a dependent'', see image attached.
