I'm helping my surviving parent figure out their estate. Turbotax has the income and deductions data I need to figure things out. I don't need to calculate, file or pay the state tax. My copy of Turbotax won't open the file, because I already filed in another state. I just want to open the file to see it. Seems unfair to ask for money for something I don't need and won't use. Short of having their computer shipped to me, is there a work-around?

If your parent's data file has a state return in it, then you have to download that state program into the software before opening the data file, or you'll get an error message.
Speak to TurboTax Support by phone, explain the situation, and see if they will work with you. If you have the *.tax2017 data file that has the parent's state return in it, then obviously that state return has been paid for. I assume the parent had the desktop software on his/her computer.
