@MR0465 As you already filed the return, the IRS will be sending you a refund so now you owe them that money back.
If you did NOT already file your return, you do NOT choose amend. You just fix the return and file. Only once you filed your return would you have to file an amended return.
You can wait till the earlier of 4/15 or the refund date from the IRS to pay your balance due.
Make sure to wait till your return is processed by the IRS before sending the amended return in or it can cause confusion.
You will still get the first original full refund (and keep it) or need to pay the first tax due. You should not amend or change your return until you get the refund from the original return or your payment has cleared.
The amended return will only be the difference you get back or need to pay. You can confirm this by printing your amendment and looking at the 1040X. Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 21 should be your additional refund. If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16 (but don't include any penalty on 1040 line 38). If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.
Ignore any 1040V voucher that prints out and the new 1040. Those are what your return would have been if you had not needed to amend.
Thank you for your input yes I see that on my TR the amnt due and the refund. I rec a letter from IRS to review my info and if I find an error I could amend. The letter says IRS will not send me the refund until they review. That's why I do not wnat to pay the tax I Owe plus the refund witch is what shows as tax due on my amneded return. I wanted to file the 1040X and pay what I owe and be done but that's not possible bcs the tax due shows a total of the refund I was supposed to get plus the tax I owe after amended. Anyway I was trying to find out if there was a way to remove the refund since I have not received it and I won;pt receive it based on the IRS letter. I guess I have to wait to hear back from IRS (60 days) before I can to file the amended return. Thank you! Mimoza
Verify Form 1040X: In the desktop or online version, navigate to the 1040X form (or "Amended Return" section). Ensure line 18 ("Prior refund") matches what you actually received. In this line you would want to enter $0.
thank you I will try if I can force the number to be zero
