Hi, I was told that I did not receive the rebate credit for reconciliation for not receiving advanced child tax credit. How do I amend this on my 2021 return?

My son's mom claimed him in 2020. The IRS apparently took back half of the child credit to give to me in 2021 when I claimed him, but I have not seen any such credit.

Did IRS send you a letter?

If so, follow their instructions. That's all you have to do.

You are confusing two different credits.

There is a recovery rebate credit for the 3rd stimulus payment.  You answer  questions for the recovery rebate credit in Federal Review.   You have to claim that on line 30 of a 2021 Form 1040 if you did not get the $1400 for a child you could claim on a 2021 return.

And there is the child tax credit which shows up on line 28.   The total amount of the credit is $3600 for a child under the age of 6, or $3000 for a child age 6 to 17.   If you got any of the advance monthly child tax credit payments between July 2021 and December 2021 you have to enter the amount you already received, and you can still get the rest of the credit on line 28.   The credit then calculates down to your total refund on line 35a.

The IRS knows how much they already sent to you, so if you make a mistake and say you did not get credits that you really received, they reduce your refund accordingly.

Try checking your online account with the IRS (and if you filed a joint return—check for BOTH of you)
