Hello there! I need help amending my 2021 tax return and specifically claiming a dependent. I am not able to find the "can you claim a dependent?" question. Any help?

I was not able to claim my son as a dependent due to our county's bungling of his social security process, resulting in us missing his child tax credit (and sizable refund) for the year 2021. We are trying to remedy this situation now that we have his SSN. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Dependents are entered in My Info.

Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number.    Careful— do not say that your child’s SSN is not valid for employment.  If your child was born in 2021 make sure you said he lived with you the whole year.  There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support.  Say NO to that question.

According to the IRS, you cannot now amend your 2021 tax return to use your son's SSN now to claim him as a dependent for purposes of the Earned income credit and the Child tax credit/Additional Child Tax credit. Your son had to have a SSN before the due date of your 2021 return (including extensions), even if your child later gets an SSN.
