Your actual question is a bit confusing,  If you need to file a tax return for the 2016 tax year, you need to download the software for 2016; a 2016 return must be printed, signed and mailed--it cannot be e-filed.  You cannot combine 2016 income with 2017 income on the same tax return.  Each tax year must be prepared and filed separately.

To file a return for a prior tax year

Only a 2017 return can be prepared online and e-filed. 

 If you need to prepare a return for 2014, 2015, or 2016 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail it.
