Filing 2022 and 2023 Missouri amended taxes

I would like to file amended 2022 and 2023 Missouri tax forms to claim an overlooked credit. I filed both of these with Turbo Tax Home and Business Desktop version, as I am using this year as well. Most of the advice I see seems to relate to the online version, so I wanted to clarify the procedure for the desktop version.

I have several questions about this:

  1. Can TurboTax help me prepare these forms, or do I need to use the forms from the Missouri govt. website?
  2. If I can use TurboTax, do I go to this year's software version, or to the version of TT for the year I want to amend? I probably still have discs for those older years.
  3. I still have the original return files. Will TT load those as a starting point, or do I need to re-enter everything?

Thanks!

Filing 2022 and 2023 Missouri amended taxes

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines.

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
  • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
  • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected.
  • You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment

Filing 2022 and 2023 Missouri amended taxes

I tried using the method posted by CatinaT1 to try to amend my Missouri returns for 2022 and 2023. I do not want to amend the federal forms because the error I am trying to correct was in overlooking a state-specific deduction of insurance premiums.

As soon as I clicked that I wanted to amend my Missouri returns but *before* I changed any numbers anywhere, the Missouri payment/refund value decreased to zero (as expected) but in the very same instant the federal ones increased from 0 to showing taxes due. For 2023, it was less than $5, for 2022 it was much more. For both years, the software automatically filled out a Federal 1040X with "corrections", which I am expected to file along with the Missouri amendments.

For both years, the federal 1040X forms show various incorrect (too low) income numbers as the original values and then "corrects" them to equal the amounts that were on my forms in the first place. Likewise, it shows that I paid too little tax (less than my forms actually show), a "corrected" amount (what I actually paid in the first place), and a difference supposedly owed now.

What might be going on here, and what can I do about it? It seems clear that the 1040-X values are wrong, as they don't match what I can clearly see on my saved pdf copies of the returns. But sending in the Missouri forms requires that I also send them the federal 1040-X, so I'm stuck.

Thanks for any advice anyone can provide!

Filing 2022 and 2023 Missouri amended taxes

Although some tax law changes might affect the federal return calculations, in most cases, amending your state return should not affect your federal return. Federal Form 1040-X should report no changes and is prepared simply to accompany your amended state return.

Your best option is to start over. When you open TurboTax Desktop, choose the button at the bottom of the main screen under "Need to Amend a Filed Return?"

  1. On the next page, click Find a Tax File and choose your originally filed return.
  2. After the file opens, choose File Save As from the main menu and enter a new filename that includes "Amended."
  3. Continue and choose "Yes, I've already filed my return" and "I need to amend my 20XX return."
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page "What do you need to change on your return?" and click Update beside "State Return."
  5. From the page "Let's work on your state return," continue and choose your state.
  6. Continue through the interview to the page "Let's Make Sure You're Ready to Review."
  7. Click the "No" option, continue, and click the option to choose what you work on.
  8. The next page provides areas where you can update the state-specific entries you need to change for the amended return.
  9. As you work through these topics, your federal refund at the top of the screen should not change.
  10. Follow the interview and make any entries needed after review.

Use Forms Mode (Forms icon in the header) to confirm that the federal 1040-X shows no changes in Column B.

Your state may use a different form for amended returns or have a checkbox on the main form to indicate it has been amended. TurboTax will let you know if you need to print and mail the state return.
