@JayneMaine per news --- IRS is significantly backed up on paper / amended returns processing for the tax year 2020. So you may not hear from them for some time ( amended returns always receive lower priority till the then current year returns have been processed. So you have to wait -- there is nothing you can do about this but wait.
For the 2021 retrun it is a fresh and original return and have no connection to 2020 return including filing status ( single/MFJ/MFS/HoH/Widower/Widow etc )
Does this answer your query ?
I had to pay tax on my submission as single and did. My amended tax a Head of Household, the IRS owes me money. So if I file and the amended return still has not been processed do I use the original 2020 filing information and what about the state who sent my additional refund with their acceptance of my amended 2020?
@JayneMaine , based on your reply, I am wondering if I understood you original post correctly. So
1. 2020 return both Federal and State(s) stand only for 2020 and do NOT affect 2021 return ( unless of course you used itemized deduction for one/or both the original and amended filings ).
2. So please prepare your 2021 as if the amended was accepted, even though there should be NO impact .
Am I missing something here ? Please tell me what I am doing wrong or reading wrong ?
1) transfer in the amended return info.
2) use the AGI from the original return to efile.
Filed by mail an amended 2020 Tax Return (Received by IRS 4/16/2021 but still hasn't been processed).
From Single to Head of Household
Filing as Single I had to pay or pay penalties to the IRS. The state I had a small refund.
As Head of Household the IRS and state owe me money.
The state accepted my amended return and paid me the additional money.
Still waiting on the IRS so how to I file this year which will be single - do I indicate the refund I should get as income from the IRS with the amended return even though I don't have it back yet or nothing (I had to pay them) under the original filing as Single.
No ... the federal refund was not received in 2021 so it goes no where on the 2021 return.
