Do I need to refile if I already filed but received a 1099-G for less ($356) than what I put as my 2016 state refund ($466).

No, you don't have to file an amended income tax return, unless you want to.

  • By adding a higher state refund amount, you are probably paying a few more dollars in taxes than you would have, had you claimed the correct amount of $356.
  • The IRS does not worry about you paying too much taxes. They worry when you pay too little taxes.

To see what difference the $110 makes, you can prepare a "dummy" amended income tax return.

  • Make sure you wait until you receive your 2017 refund before making any changes and delete it after you are done.
  • If you don't delete, the wrong information will carryover to your 2018 income tax return.
  • To see if it is worth amending, click on How to amend (change or correct) a return you already filed
