Hi there! So I filed my taxes the other day and the system told me that I had over contributed to my HSA last year. For reference, I was employed 9mo last year (and thus only had a HDHP medical plan for 9mo of the year and not the full year) and yet apparently I had "overfunded" my HSA (probably due to the fact that my employer had front loaded their contribution instead of spacing it out per pay period). Anyhoo, since my HSA was "overcontributed" last year, I called my HSA custodian just now and processed a "return of excess contribution" form in order to return the money to me. Now, I am thinking... do I need to file an amended tax return? Or what is going to happen in this scenario? Any tips and advice? Thanks so much in advance 🙂

Thank you for clarifying. Since you clicked on the button before you hit the final "file" button, TurboTax likely handled the adjustment automatically. You should not have to amend. Here is how to verify:
Go to your Tax returns and doc folder near the bottom of your Tax home screen and open the pdf of your filed return to look at Schedule 1 (Additional Income and Adjustments to Income), Line 8f (Income from Form 8889). If you see the amount of your excess contribution listed here, you do not need to amend because it means it was added back to your taxable income.
You will only need to report any earnings on next year's return.
Since your employer's HSA contribution was made pre-tax and was excluded from your W-2 income, you should amend your return to add it back into your taxable income.
When completing your amendment, Form 1040-X, you will primarily correct Form 8889. To access the form, type Form 8889 in the search and then click on jump to form 8889.
Once there, when asked, "Do any of these situations apply?", select the box, "_ overfunded their HSA last year", then Continue through the remaining interview questions where you will indicate the amount of your excess contribution.
Now that you have requested that your HSA custodian process a return of excess contribution, you will receive a Form 1099-SA in January, 2027. Although the excess amount itself is taxable on your 2025 return, the gains earned on that excess should be reported on next year's return (2026).
thank you! then how come the software didn't say i needed to file an amended tax return? when i was filing taxes, the software let me know that i had overcontributed to my HSA for the 2025 tax year. Like it told me that I had overcontributed to my HSA and so i clicked on the button that says: "I will withdraw the excess contribution before April 15th 2026". the software never said anything about having to file an amended tax return
