Sorry but there is nothing you can do after the fact ... the prior form 8888 will be honored except the amount you have to be refunded will be adjusted automatically ... the last place listed will be changed first.
For instance ... if your refund was $3000 and you asked for $1500 to be put in account #1 and $1500 into account #2 and the refund was reduced to $2000 then $1500 will go to the #1 account and only $500 to the #2 account and there is nothing you can do about it... you cannot file a new form 8888 to adjust how much goes where.

Ok so I think I need to be more clear. I submitted a returned then amended and then got the letter. So I was thinking form 8888 because 1 it's referenced in the letter and 2 you can't put a bank account on an amendment. So I wanted to file an 8888 to assure its direct deposited and I don't get a check in the mail. However, it doesn't give info of where to send that form it just says attach to your return. How can I do that when the return obviously was filed prompting the letter that they did the adjustment. I just ultimately want to ensure that it goes to my original bank account and not a check.
Ok I think I understand better after reading all the instructions so the 8888 is only if you have a prior one that is just stating how they would deposit if you did have an 8888 on file. So my case it's just gonna go to the original return bank account since it was just adjusted from them for math error. So no amendment or 8888 needed
The original return must be processed first and the original refund released before the IRS will process the amended return where that refund check will be mailed to the address on the 1040X ... the 8888 on file will not work for an amended return. FYI ... amended returns take 20 weeks or more to process ... patience will be needed.
