Did you use the Free online edition to file the 2015 tax return?  If so, you will need to start a 2016 online Free return, upgrade and pay for the Plus edition to have access to all prior year online tax returns.

Yes, in order to access prior return you need to have paid version of TurboTax. If you need the tax return  from 2015 to file taxes for 2016, TurboTax transfers info from 2015 to 2016 so no need to obtain the paper copy.
