Can you tell me why it is taking so long for my return to be accepted?

I filed on 4/15/2019 and it is showing that it should have been accepted on 4/17/2019 but it has not and the payment I owe has not come out of my account

Because so many taxpayers file on the deadline, the IRS gets backlogged so it takes extra time to process returns and payments. If your return was accepted, your payment should follow within a few days.

You can check to see if your direct debit has been made to the IRS by viewing your account on the IRS website:

https://www.irs.gov/payments/view-your-tax-account. Click on the "Create or View Your Account" link.
