Can we get a refund for more than we have paid in this year?
When I used another software our refund was twice as much as was deducted from our income.

You can if you are eligible for a refundable credit such as the earned income tax credit.

One more question: does this refer to deductions, or credits only? When I itemized deductions the $$ were so much higher!

Residential energy credits are not refundable credits. And yes, the rule applies to credits only. Deductions may reduce your liability to $0 but will not result in refunds beyond what you paid in.
