Can I still receive a stimulus rebate if I didn't receive one with my 2020 tax returns? I did not receive any stimulus checks in 2020 or 2021.

The only way to get the 1st or 2nd stimulus amount is to file a 2020 tax return.   If you filed a 2020 tax return and did not use the recovery rebate credit on your return, you will need to amend your 2020 return.   Before you do that, look at line 30 of your 2020 Form 1040.   Is there an amount there?

The other place you can check to see if the IRS thinks they gave you the 1st or 2nd stimulus is your online account on the IRS site;

https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account

You can get the 3rd EIP payment as a recovery rebate credit on your 2021 tax return.   Go through the Federal Review section to answer the questions about that credit.  It will end up on line 30 of your Form 1040.

Can I still receive a stimulus rebate if I didn't receive one with my 2020 tax returns? I did not receive any stimulus checks in 2020 or 2021.

It depends.  Did you meet the qualifications for the various stimulus payments?

The qualifications for the first two stimulus payments are:

  • you were a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien in 2020,
  • you were not a dependent of another taxpayer, and
  • you have a Social Security number that is valid for employment.

There are income limitations are if your adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than:

  • $150,000 if married and filing a joint return or filing as a qualifying widow or widower
  • $112,500 if filing as head of household or
  • $75,000 if filing as a single or as married filing separately.

The stimulus payments were based upon 2018 or 2019 tax year information.  If you did not receive either of the first two stimulus payments, you may receive that amount through a Recovery Rebate Credit.  The credit was based upon 2020 tax information and can be found on line 30 of the 2020 Federal 1040 tax return.

The qualifications for the third stimulus payment are:

  • you were a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien in 2021,
  • you were not a dependent of another taxpayer’s 2020 tax return, and
  • you have a Social Security number.

If you did not receive the third stimulus payment, you may receive that amount through a Recovery Rebate Credit found on line 30 of the 2021 Federal 1040 tax return.

At your IRS online account, you can find whether a payment was issued to you that you did not receive.  You can also find this information on your tax transcript.

There are several reasons why your account might show you were issued a stimulus payment even though you did not receive one.

  1. Your first stimulus payment was offset for past due child support payments. You are still considered to have received that payment and must include that amount when calculating the Recovery Rebate Credit.
  2. You were issued an EIP Card and inadvertently discarded it, not realizing it was your stimulus payment. You may request a free replacement through MetaBank® Customer Service by calling 800-240-8100 and following the prompts for a lost or discarded card.3)
  3. Your payment was made to a bank account or address you shared with a spouse.
  4. Your payment was returned by the post office or financial institution and has not been credited back to your account yet. See How do I request a Payment Trace to track my Economic Impact Payment?
