Can i file previous years tax return after filing this years tax return?

Yes, you can file prior year tax returns after filing your current return.

However, you will need to use a TurboTax CD/Download product to complete you previous year return. You will print and mail because the IRS is no longer accepting prior year returns for e-file.

Can i file previous years tax return after filing this years tax return?

I purchased the 2019 TurboTax Deluxe CD and downloaded it.  I need to file taxes for 2016, 2017, and 2018, but I'm unable to find anyway to request the software to do any other date than 2019.  The advertisement stated that I could do up to five federal taxes using this software. Is this not correct? I'm really confused at this point.  Did I spend $80 for nothing?

You cannot use the online software for those past years.  Online is ONLY for 2019, nor can you use the 2019 desktop software you purchased for any other year.  Each tax year has its own software program.  They are all separate.  The returns for 2016, 2017, and 2018 cannot be e-filed.  They have to be mailed.  Do not try to put any of them in the same envelope.   (The "five federal returns" means you could do that many returns for 2019--not other years.)

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2016, 2017, or 2018 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline.  If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.
