Can I file a tax return for someone else using my TurboTax account?

A TurboTax Online account can be used for only one tax return. If you want to file a tax return for someone else you have to use a different account. If you don't have another account that you can use, create a new account. You can have up to 5 accounts with the same email address.

If you try to do another return in the same account it will overwrite the first return in that account, and the first return will be gone and not retrievable.

If you use TurboTax Desktop instead of TurboTax Online you can do as many returns as you want with one copy of the desktop software, and you can e-file up to 5 federal returns with the associated state returns.

If you are using TurboTax Online, you cannot prepare and file a tax return for another person using an existing TurboTax account. You'll need to create a new account, distinct from the account you used to file the first return.

If you are using TurboTax Desktop, you can start a new return by clicking on Start a new return on the Welcome page of TurboTax.

How do I create a new account in TurboTax Online using the email address of my existing account? When I try to create a new account with my existing account's email address, it says that email is already in use and will not let me create a new account.

You can file a tax return for someone else  but as stated above you must create a new account to do this.  You can no longer create more than one account per email address. So you will need additional email accounts to do this.

Somethings to keep in mind:

• You must create a new account with a new user ID to file for another person to avoid overwriting your own return.
• You can create unlimited returns and e-file up to 5 federal returns from one computer if you are using a TurboTax Desktop program.
• Each return filed must be paid for separately.
• Make sure you have the person's consent and all necessary documentation.
• The taxpayer is responsible for the accuracy of their own return.
• It is highly recommended to have separate accounts for each person to keep their information private and securely stored.
