I used TurboTax desktop software and filed my 2024 federal and state (CA) tax returns. I'm trying to amend my 2024 federal and state tax returns. When I finish and come to the filing page, the software says that I can only mail in my federal return, while I can e-file my state return. On the following screen, it says that the e-filing window is closed. On the next screen, the software provides two options: e-file and mail.
Can I e-file the tax amend for 2024 after the e-file window for 2025 is open?

Yes, usually, but not always. Today is the opening of filing season. Try today and see if it goes through. If not, you will have to mail.
I got another error when e-filing the amended return. TurboTax blocks me because it expects a signature date between 01/01/2025 and 12/31/2025. It's a forever loop that I click e-file, but keep getting bounced back to the date validation.
This Support FAQ says you can, unless there's a unique situation in your return. But I don't know how accurate that FAQ is. I've asked that a Moderator review it.
So I don't know if you will be able to efile the 2024 amended return using the desktop software or not, but you can't with that error message. I'm curious if your 2024 software knows that your 2024 original return was accepted. Maybe it thinks you are trying to efile a 2024 original return, which can't be done with TurboTax.
If using the Windows version, try this. I don't know if it will help or not, or if it will even let you still do it. With your return open, go to the FILE menu of the TurboTax interface in the left corner. In the dropdown choose "Electronic filing", then in the next menu "check efile status." I don't know if it will still check on a 2024 status or not.
Also, for this amended return did you go through the actual amend process to prepare a Form 1040-X? Hopefully, you didn't just open the filed 2024 return and make some changes and are trying to efile again. Otherwise, it will think it is still the original return. If you did go through the formal amending process, you should be able to view/print the Form 1040-X to review before filing. Again, I don't know if it will let you efile it or not.
Thank you for your reply. Following your suggestion, I checked the e-file status in TurboTax, and both returns show as accepted. However, I am still being blocked by the signature date issue. I assume the software supports e-filing a 2024 amended return in 2025, but not in 2026. I have seen similar questions posted years ago. It seems that Intuit is so arrogant that they have been unwilling to fix this small but frustrating bug.
I received word back that the Moderators say the FAQ I linked above is correct for tax years 2025, 2024, and 2023. However, even though they say the FAQ is correct, they don't know why people are unable to efile the prior year amended return; i.e., why it's putting up the usual "efiling is closed" error based on dates. So hopefully, they are sending it up the chain to see why it's not allowing the prior-year amending efile process to occur. No telling what they will find out or how soon, or how long it would take to correct.
