Can I claim the American Opportunity Credit if I have only claimed 3 times? I claimed in 2013,14,15. She graduated in 2017. I was denied in 2016. Made too much.

Perhaps, if you meet all of the criteria.  One is that the student must:

  • Not have claimed the AOTC or the former Hope credit for more than four tax years

So the fact that you were disallowed in 2016 does not mean you are automatically excluded.

To enter/edit education credits:

1. Open your return (or continue if open).

2. Type “education credits” (upper-case works too) in Search box (upper right-hand corner of the screen)

3. Click on “Jump to education credits” link.

4. Answer screen interview prompts.
