Can I change my form of payment (from check to credit card) after my return was accepted by the IRS?

I opted for payment by check and a 1040V was generated, but now I want to pay by credit card so that I earn the points.

If you have not mailed a check with the payment voucher, Form 1040-V, then you can use the IRS payment website to pay by credit card.  Note there are processing fees when using a credit card - https://www.irs.gov/payments/pay-your-taxes-by-debit-or-credit-card
