Can I Amend my return for 2016? I have downloaded the software, but got a pdf file of my return, which of course I can't use.

Why do you say that you can't use the pdf of your return? If the pdf includes all of the forms and worksheets you should have everything that you need (especially if you saved the tax-related documents that you used to do the original return.) You may have to retype the data from the pdf, but you can still use it.
