Please clarify your question by adding some additional information so we may better help you. Such as: Have you completed the Amended return in TurboTax? What is the reason for the amended return? What are you changing on the amended return? What did you enter into TurboTax to implement the change you are trying to make. Have you filed the amended return yet and what year is it for? Does Column A + Column B = Column C on your amended return?
I had to update with correct 1095-A, enter in my OT hours. I have filed my return, the refund on it has already been sent to me. The off set from what I owe to what all of the documents show is the same amount (607) The 1040-X shows the correct information. It shows negative amount on line 19 (-1176) line 18 is the incorrect refund amount the 1st return has (2346). When I did a mock return with a different service with all of the correct information to compare, the refund was coming up as $607. What portion am I getting wrong to have this amended return show the right numbers? The amended return is going off of the 1st return and the information used correct? Is it saying because my refund for the initial return was $2346, (wrong) that i owe $1,739? 1040-X
@LindaS5247 so going off of what this says, my adjusted refund from the IRS was $139.00 (46.77 after TT took their cut). The incorrect refund because of the wrong information (original 1095-A that was sent) was $2346. What is the wrong portion here? The info that was given to me was incorrect.
Your original return showed that your refund was $2,346. Once you amended the return, your actual refund was determined to be $607 and not $2,346. Because you received more refund than you should have, you will need to pay back the difference between these two amounts which is $1,739 ($2,346-$607), which is the amount that is shown on line 20 of the amended return. From what I can see of the amended return, it appears to be correct as is and you will need to pay the IRS back the $1,739 of excess refund that you already received.
@RogerD1 I did not receive a refund of $2,346 though. I got a refund of $139.00. This is where I’m lost if the correct amount is $607, why am I owing $1,739?
Sorry the amended return is right. Did you actually get the original $2,346 refund? But if you had done the original return right the refund should have only been $607? Then you do owe back the difference. You got too much the first time.
You will still get the refund from the first original return. In fact you should not even amend until the first return has fully processed and you get the first refund.
Then the amended 1040X return is only for the difference you get back or owe. I think the cover sheet shows what the original return WOULD have been if you did it right the first time. Ignore the new 1040 that might print out.
Go by the actual 1040X. Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund. If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16. If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.
If you have a tax due, do not send the 1040V. Just include a check with the 1040X. Ignore the 1040V. Or You can pay the IRS directly at
Pick Amended and 1040X on the payment page.
Yes, as RogerD1 states above, from looking at your documents posted it appears that your original refund was $2,346. After you amended your tax return, your adjusted refund is now $607 (See line 34 Amount you owe). That's the amount you should have gotten if you had filed your tax return including your Form 1095-A in the first place. The difference between the two is $1,739. That is the additional amount that you will have to pay the IRS.
Line 20 of your Form 1040-X shown above is the amount you owe after adjusting your tax return for your missing Form 1095-A, $1,739.
The IRS originally gave you $2,346 for a refund. After you amended your tax return, it showed that you were supposed to get only $607. So the IRS gave you $1,179 too much and that is the amount you owe them back.
NO i did not receive a refund of $2,346.
i DID receive a refund of $139.
I DID attach my 1095-A that was initially sent to me.
I was sent a Corrected 1095-A from the marketplace, which is what is included in my amended return.
How is it that putting all the numbers in correctly on another tax service, gets me a refund of $607.. but Turbo Tax shows I am owing?
@LindaS5247 @VolvoGirl @RogerD1 I even did a third return to triple check. same thing.
WHOA. Let's start over. We thought you had received the first $2,346 refund. So no, DO NOT AMEND. The amended return will be wrong. You have to find out what the IRS changed on your return. Maybe they already fixed it for you. Did the original 1040 return you filed have the 2,346 on line 35a as the refund? You need to look up your IRS account and see what they have for you and why they only sent you $139. Or was the 139 from the state? If the IRS changed your return they will mail you a letter explaining it. Wait for the letter before amending.
