Amending A Return After Receiving A Late 1099-NEC

I filed my return and received my refund checks (fed & state) but now I received a 1099-NEC form for consulting work I did for the company I retired from last year.  I don't have a "business" as such, I was just paid for some extra work.  How do I properly amend my taxes?  When I try in TT it's asking for my business ID and acting like I need to have a business.

If you have net self employment income of $400 or more you have to file a schedule C in your personal 1040 return for self employment business income...  so technically you DO have a business for tax purposes but you do not need to get/have an EIN ... skip the sections you do not need.

You may get a 1099-NEC   for some of your income but you need to report all your income.  So you need to keep your own good records. Here is some reading material……

Amending A Return After Receiving A Late 1099-NEC

In the eyes of the IRS, you are considered self-employed if you received a Form 1099-NEC for services performed by you.  So, TurboTax is on the right track.

This means that you do need to include a Schedule C as part of your amended return to report your self-employment income and any associated expenses.  You are not required to have a Federal ID number for Schedule C if that is the business ID you are referring to in your question (as also confirmed by Critter-3).  You will need to specify the type of work that you did so that a business code can be entered on Schedule C.

Once you start through the process of amending your return, you will need to add Schedule C and Form 1099-NEC.  The following TurboTax help article will guide you through that process:
