Amending a report

As soon as I click on to amend a return, and before even entering any values, the amount of refund displayed on the screen changes to a negative number.  I understand that if I enter additional income in the amended report, I may owe some tax and the refund number can be negative.  But I do not understand why it becomes negative even without entering anything at all.

Thanks

Amending a report

If your TurboTax refund changes to a negative refund number without you entering anything on an amendment, there could be a few possible reasons for this:

  1. Incorrect Tax Data: Sometimes, if there was an error in the data you initially entered (such as a miscalculated deduction or income), TurboTax may automatically adjust the refund after re-calculating the entire return. Even without amendments, the software may reprocess the information to reflect the correct refund or balance due.
  2. Tax Updates: TurboTax may update or sync with the latest IRS tax tables or tax law changes that could affect your refund. This could lead to changes if there have been updates that impact your original filing.
  3. Federal or State Changes: If you’re receiving state-specific credits or deductions, those amounts might have changed after your initial filing, and TurboTax would adjust your refund accordingly.
  4. Filing Status or Deductions: Sometimes TurboTax will automatically change certain information like your filing status, dependents, or deductions based on input errors or corrections to ensure accuracy in your return.
