Amended Return rejected

I filed for an amendment to my Tax return to change the filing status from Married filing separately to filing jointly. I had already filed and paid the tax for first Separate filing and realizing filing jointly would reduce overall tax bill, I am filing an amendment.

After filing the amendment I got an email saying return rejected with reason-

"IND-027-02 - If 'PINTypeCd' in the Return Header has the value "Self-Select On-Line" and 'SpouseBirthDt' has a value, then 'SpousePriorYearAGIAmt' or 'SpousePriorYearPIN' or 'SpouseIdentityProtectionPIN' must have a value."

I believe this is becasue my spouses prior year AGI or prior year PIN was not used to sign the return.

But TurboTax does not ask either of these in the 'File a Return' flow.

This error is happening because when you switch from "Separate" to "Jointly," the IRS system treats your spouse as a "new" signer on the account. To verify their identity for e-filing, the IRS requires their 2024 (prior year) AGI or PIN—even if TurboTax didn't prompt you for it during the initial amendment walk-through.

To fix this and get past the rejection, follow these steps:

    • Go to the File tab in the left-hand menu.
    • Proceed through the screens until you reach the "Signature" or "Verify your Identity" page.
    • Look for the section for your Spouse.
    • If the AGI field is blank, enter their 2024 Adjusted Gross Income.  Note: Since you originally filed "Married Filing Separately" for 2024, use the AGI from Line 11 of your spouse's 2024 Form 1040.

In the Signature page it doesn't give any box to enter spouse's AGI. It just asks for PIN, Date of Birth and Today's Date. I set my spouses new pin same as my PIN and now I can't change it.

In Verify your identiy page, it says it took your identity from the original return.

You should go back and review the original information that you entered about your spouse.  Don't go to the signature section at the end of the return to make the changes.  Go back to where you first entered your personal information and change the information there.  Then, when you get to the end, it will offer you some signature options.
