Amend taxes to receive stimulus for newborn

Last year I claimed my 10 y/o on my taxes. This year I had my fiancé claim our 10 y/o and I claimed our 5 month old. When asked if I received my stimulus last year and to enter the amount it said I was not owed anything so I was not able to claim the stimulus for my newborn. Can I file an amendment to claim it? (taxes were filed and accepted by IRS already)

When I did my fiancés taxes it also asked him how much he received last year in stimulus money and it also told him he was not owed more so neither on of us had the option to claim it for our newborn.

No, you do not need to amend.

The payments were an advance credit for 2020.  2019 information was used in sending out the payments since 2020 tax returns had not been filed at the point the stimulus payments were sent out.  They are being reconciled when you do your 2020 return.  In some cases, people may have been given a stimulus payment based on their 2019 dependents that did not qualify based on their 2020 dependents, and vice versa.

In your particular case, you received a stimulus for 1 dependent based on your 2019 return.  Now that you are filing your 2020 return, you still only have 1 dependent and you received the stimulus already for 1 dependent.  If you were claiming the other child still in 2020, you would have 2 dependents and would qualify for the rebate recovery credit.

As far as your fiance, from what you have said, he is claiming 1 dependent this year.  In 2019, did he have any dependents on his return?  How much stimulus money did he receive?  As long as you are showing the child as a qualified dependent, he should get the stimulus for himself and 1 dependent, based on his 2020 return.

Amend taxes to receive stimulus for newborn

My fiancé did not claim a dependent for 2019. He received a stimulus for himself only both times that it was issued. This year he claimed our 10 y/o for 2020 (whom I claimed in 2019 and received a stimulus for). This year I claimed our newborn (born September 2020) whom I'm trying to get a stimulus for since I believe he qualifies. Just wasn't sure how to go about it since TurboTax did not give me the option to claim it.

He should get the Stimulus amount for the 10 year old again even if you got it in 2019.  So something is wrong on his return.  The 10year old must not be showing up as a dependent on his return.  Delete the child and re enter him.  Go slow and watch the questions.

For your return, sorry.  The Recovery Rebate Credit is based on the number of people, not which one.  You already got the stimulus for one child last year.  And you are only claiming 1 child this year.  But he gets the amount for the 10 y/o this year.  So together you are getting the 10y/o amount twice, which is the same as claiming 2 children.
