Amend return to claim Recovery Rebate credit

I filed my 2020 taxes and said I could be claimed as a dependent (but wasn't claimed) - I realized later that that's not accurate; I'm not a dependent for anyone. I also didn't receive any stimulus checks last year. How do I amend my 2020 returns on TurboTax so that I can claim the Recovery Rebate credit (stimulus check credit)?

Yes, you should amend your tax return to change the dependent status you entered incorrectly. That should allow you to receive the stimulus checks. You will have to wait until your tax return is processed and you receive your refund before you can do the amendment though.

You will see an option to amend your return on your home page in TurboTax. You can do this for no additional charge.

Thank you! Will the site guide me through amending the form (eg. asking questions to figure out what needs to be amended) just like it did with filling out my actual taxes?

Yes, it will.  To see how to amend your taxes with TurboTax, click here:

Steps to amend in TurboTax

How to file amendment

If you meet the eligibility requirements and you are not claimed as a dependent on your parents’ 2020 taxes or anyone else’s, you can file a tax return and claim the Recovery Rebate Credit if you didn’t receive a stimulus payment. To see eligibility, click here: Eligibility

Hi,

I am trying to amend my 2020 taxes so I can claim the recovery rebate credit. I am however not seeing the rebate credit as an option in the Turbo tax amendment form/system. I initially ticked that I could be claimed a s a dependent but I have been able to successfully amend that. The issue I'm now having is claiming the credit itself. It is not listed as one of the credits i can claim. Anyone else having this same issue?

I'm having the same exact problem, trying to do the same thing. I can't find the recovery rebate credit section anywhere and I can't 'search' for it using the search bar either? It just redirects me...

Looking for answers too.

I filed my 2020 return on jan15th and claimed I recieved the 2nd stimulus because it said it was mailed on Jan 6th but it was returned to the IRS. Now I have to amend my return but can not find the option to amend the recovery rebate credit.

The IRS is making some updates that change how we support amended returns.  We'll be updating our product after we have IRS guidance on the best way to file amended returns so they can be processed quickly and accurately.  The IRS has urged taxpayers not to amend their tax returns at this time.

Please see this IRS link about amending returns.

Here are some important TurboTax links about the stimulus:

How will the third stimulus impact me?

How will I know if I was issued a stimulus check?

What if I already filed my 2020 taxes?

Hi @ReneeM7122,

I amended my return today - I saw that my federal tax refund amount went up by $1800, but the net change on TurboTax said $0. Unfortunately, I had submitted these returns this morning before your comment - are there any other steps I can take?

Thank you @ReneeM7122 , that IRS directive is obviously linked to taxes paid for unemployment benefit. We are looking for answers based on the recovery rebate credit and not unemployment benefit.

Hmm, that sounds interesting. What portion did you amend that made it reflect the $1800? @ewspiders

Hello,

I have linked below exactly how the IRS has stated these should be applied to an amended return below. This article is from 03/01/2021 and I think it’s absurd that TurboTax is the only servicer unable to give me a correct amended return. I want to e-file but can only do so through this servicer and I am hoping this will be corrected in time.

Amended return: recovery rebate credit, 1G

I was on with support for over an hour trying to update something that was not ready to be published in the first place.

Here is some comprehensive information about the stimulus:

The American Rescue Plan provides relief for millions of Americans through numerous measures, including a third round of stimulus checks, unemployment benefit extensions, and expansions of the Child Tax Credit and the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

This means if you qualify for a third stimulus check, you could get up to $1,400 for each taxpayer in your household plus $1,400 for each dependent.

Generally, you should qualify if:

  • You’re a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien
  • You have a valid Social Security number
  • You’re not claimed as a dependent on anyone else’s return, and
  • Your adjusted gross income (AGI) is less than
    • $150,000 if you’re married and filing a joint return or a qualifying widow
    • $112,500 if you’re filing as head of household, or
    • $75,000 if you’re filing single or married filing separately

If your AGI is above those amounts, your payment will be reduced (“phased out”). If your AGI is above the amounts below, you won’t receive a third stimulus payment.

  • $160,000 if you’re married and filing a joint return or a qualifying widow
  • $120,000 if you’re filing as head of household, or
  • $80,000 if you’re filing single or married filing separately

To find out if you are eligible and how much you can expect, visit our stimulus calculator.

Do I need to apply to get a stimulus check?

You don’t need to do anything to get your stimulus check. The IRS will determine eligibility based on your last tax return (either 2019 or 2020) and will likely send your payment to the bank account where your tax refund was deposited.

When will I get my stimulus check?

The IRS has begun distributing stimulus payments and we expect people could receive their stimulus payments as early as next week (March 17th).

For information on when you can expect your stimulus payment, check the IRS Get My Payment tool which will be updated starting the week of March 15th.

What about my state's stimulus?

If your state has a stimulus program in place, you don’t need to do anything to get your state stimulus check.

@ReneeM7122

The issue is that the recovery rebate credit is not being applied to box 15 of form 1040X as a refundable credit (other box checked with RRC listed) when filing through TurboTax. However, it is still listing the updated refund amount on the generated 1040 form when reviewing files to send on amended returns.

I have attached a picture of the 1040X form below. This took a five minute google search and the information comes directly from the IRS released on 03/01/2021.

The IRS posted recommendations on 03/01/2021 on this exact situation. The amended return was only available today within TurboTax. It needs to be updated to include the RRC under other credits which it is not currently doing. @ReneeM7122

EXACTLY! You are absolutely right @Noneyabusiness . TurboTax made us wait for so long, you'd think they would have come ready and prepared.

Okay so what I’m taking from this is that we can’t amend to get the recovery rebate credit currently on turbotax?

The program DOES add the credit to the amended return, but it seems the entry is going on the incorrect line on the 1040X.

You might wait a few days as this is being repaired.

The Federal Review tab at the top will take you to the Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC) so that you can change the amounts you did or did not receive.

See the instructions below.

In TurboTax Online, to claim the Recovery Rebate credit please do the following:

  1. Sign into your account and continue from where you left off
  2. Click on Federal in the left-hand column, then on Federal Review on the top of the screen
  3. On the next page titled Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount, click on Continue
  4. Follow the interview - review the amounts and make the necessary changes.
  5. TurboTax will determine whether you are entitled to any additional stimulus
  6. Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as a credit on line 30 of your form 1040.
