2020 Amended Tax Return still not processed

I have been told by the IRS that the amended return was received in July, but it continues to say that they are still processing it. I can't find a straight answer about the e-file process. One answer said I could e file it through Turbotax, the other said I need to send a paper copy. What do I need to do.....it says they received it. It's been 9 months.

Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return. During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six months or more for many amended returns. Do not expect quick results from amending. When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check. They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns. You can watch for information here:

Can you tell me....If I filed (2020) through Turbo Tax Amended Return online, would I still need to send a paper copy to the IRS? There are answers saying "yes", and "no". I can't get in touch with a live person with TT and I read online that they don't support e-file for electronic file. I'm very confused because I went back on my same account and filled out the amended return, and thought I was good to go. I can't get that confirmed.

You would have been able to e-file an amended 2020 return until the end of 2021, so if you e-filed by then and it was accepted, you do not need to re-send it. After the beginning of 2022 it is not possible to e-file an amended 2020 return. Sorry---but it is taking the understaffed, backlogged IRS months to process amended returns so if you know they have your amended return all you can do is wait patiently.

OMG I am in the SAME situation!!

I have tried calling the IRS over and over and over! The website shows my amended return for 2020 being accepted on 1/28/22. However, after the 12 weeks passed and it still wasn’t processed, I have called over and over again. Every time I go through the whole system and then just get a message saying to call back later. ????

Any advice? There’s a 20K difference in what I owe and it’s vital I get this processed and resolved. I know there have been delays but now it’s been 9 months and still nothing. ???

It's so frustrating. I am making (unnecessary) payments on the 20K I no longer owe and it's breaking me.
