Question

Why won't TurboTax let me e-file my NY state taxes?

I completed my tax return, paid for it, and then was told I can't e-file my NY State taxes. It is actually a law in NY state that I have to e-file them and it says it directly on the tax return that Turbotax told me to "mail in". I called and spoke with customer service for over an hour and they were baffled. They couldn't find an error or anything that would be preventing me from e-filing. They said the only thing they could think of is that one of the forms isn't yet available for e-filing in my state but it might become available soon. So I'm stuck in limbo and I have no idea what is preventing me from e-filing. I have been using Turbotax for years and never had this problem. This is also the first year they told me I had to use "premier" because of something in my taxes (probably my investments). Needless to say, I am quite mad and want some sort of definitive answer about why they aren't allowing me to e-file and also why they even have "mail in" as an option for a state where they know it is illegal to mail in the return. I should be able to file my completed taxes that I have paid for.

NY explicitly exempts you from the e-file requirement if the software you are using cannot e-file the NY return.

That is on the NY tax website.

But, I suspect that there are going to be some updates to the NY software before the April filing date.

I will certainly look into your claim but regardless I should not have to mail in my return when I paid over $100 to be able to e-file it, the same as I have done for years.

Some situations are just not e-filable but if it produced an error then that is a bug that needs to be fixed.

There are many reports with NY and it is under investigation and there will probably be an update to the NY software prior to the filing date.
