That is the way it should be handled. You should wait until you get your refund from your original return before you prepare your amended return form 1040X. You may want to hold onto it instead of spending it in case you owe taxes on your amended return. You have plenty of time to prepare, print, sign and mail an amended return before the April 15 filing deadline.
