Question

TurboTax Online will not allow me to correct a rejected 2024 state tax amendment without downloading desktop app

Married filing jointly, e-filed an amended 2024 state tax form to correct an oversight on our end by adding a double-tax credit for income taxed by other states. We only amended one state and did not make corrections or e-file an amendment on federal.

We received a rejection with an error note: "On California Schedule X, there cannot be a value for both Amount You Owe and Refund."

When we log back into our TurboTax Online portal to fix this error the amend option is no longer allowing us to make corrections online and is instead trying to force us to download the desktop app. Customer support help line is unable to figure out why it will not allow us to make the corrections online especially after we already e-filed online and it's no longer pending (received a rejection). Additionally, other tax years (2025, 2023, etc) are showing us the option to amend online. It is only the tax year 2024 where we e-filed an amendment that TurboTax is not giving us the option to make corrections online after receiving a rejection. We want to avoid using the desktop app, its UI is completely different and confusing.

I've seen others post about a similar bug that TurboTax will not allow them to proceed online. Has anyone been able to bypass this bug and correct their rejected amended tax return online?

Sounds like something got stuck. You can try these things:

  • Log Out Completely: Before doing anything else, click Sign Out in the TurboTax menu.
  • Clear Cache and Cookies: This removes old, "corrupted" data that might be confusing the website.
  • Use an Incognito (Private) Window: This is the most effective "quick fix" because it launches the browser without any saved history or extensions (like AdBlockers) that often interfere with tax forms.
  • Check Pop-up Blockers: TurboTax often opens forms (like the 1099 PDF) or payment windows in a separate pop-up. Look at the right side of your address bar for a small icon with a "red X"—click it and select "Always allow pop-ups from Intuit."
  • Restart the Browser: Close all open windows of your browser entirely and then reopen it.

Most TurboTax errors happen because the browser is trying to use an old "session" from a previous visit. By clearing the cache or using Incognito mode, you force the browser to establish a brand-new, secure connection with the Intuit servers.

Unfortunately, I've already tried all of that both yesterday and today and it has not worked.
