Question

Turbotax had me enter my local Kansas City tax information and made it look like it would be paid online. How can I confirm that I don't need to do it myself separately?

My employer did not withhold these local taxes (1%).

TurboTax only prepares a few city or local tax returns as an extra step in your state return.  For most local tax returns you are on your own.  Your only record of paying your local tax will be your own bank/credit card records

Thanks! That link is helpful to confirm that Turbotax has the capability to e-file the Kansas City tax. The problem I have now is in the KCMO online tax portal, it doesn't show as being filed, even though while checking out in Turbotax, I filled out and submitted the e-file request, including supplying my bank routing and account number. My concern is that it's just taking longer for some reason, so I'm afraid to also file on the KCMO website separately and then double pay my owed taxes. There's nothing in my view of my tax submission/documents/e-file information for 2022 that helps show me that anything was actually filed with Kansas City.

I wanted to reply to this, even though the original thread is from three years ago.  I had these same questions yesterday, when I used TurboTax online to prepare my federal, state, and local taxes for 2025.  I am a Kansas City resident who received a W-2 without local withholdings (for 3PSP from Guardian, which is treated as wages) and also had a side gig doing some freelance work over the summer.

I knew from doing my taxes last year that I would need to file a Kansas City Wage Earner return to pay taxes on the wages I earned, so I was not surprised that TurboTax guided me through the RD-109 form.  But it also asked whether I needed to file a Profits return (Form RD-108) for the side gig.  I double-checked the requirements on the Kansas City Finance Department tax forms page before completing those steps.

When I got to the end, TurboTax said that it could e-file my local returns in addition to my federal and state returns for 2025.  I was a bit nervous until I received email confirmations that all of the returns had been accepted.  In addition to the federal and state confirmations, I got an email regarding the RD-109 with the subject Kansas City Tax Filing Accepted and a Kansas City Personal PRT return confirmation with the subject State Return Accepted.  Last year was the first year I filed an RD-109; a few days after I got the email confirmations, I received a letter from the Kansas City Finance Department Revenue Division notifying me of my Wage Earner registration.  I took this as additional proof that the return had been received, but I was not able to see that in the city’s Quick Tax online filing system until I created an account and completed my registration.

TurboTax did ask for my bank account information yesterday, but only in regard to federal and state taxes; it mentioned that vouchers would be printed in order for my local taxes to be paid.  I suppose you could mail a voucher to the Finance Department along with a check, but it is easy to pay with Quick Tax (you don’t even need an account).  I did that last year, and now that I have registered, I can see my payment along with my return status.

Anyway, I hope this helps anyone who may be in a similar situation.  Good luck!
