Question

Should I be worried that my net change was over 7,000 if I just added a dependent on my amended return? Or did i do something incorrectly.

Without seeing your return and having all of the details of your situation, it is impossible to say if this amount is correct.

However, if you added one dependent who is under 17 you would have potentially received a $2,200 Child Tax Credit.  If your income is under the threshold for the Earned Income Tax Credit, this could have upped your refund as well.  If you were previously filing as single and then after claiming the dependent went to the filing status of head of household, your standard deduction would have increased which would have lowered your taxable income by $7,875.  So, yes, it is possible that your refund could have increased by that amount, but again it is very dependent on your before and after filing status and your income and any other deductions or credits (like if they were a college student and you claimed an education credit)
