Question

IRS rejected 2020 return - no 2019 return on file????

I filed electronically through TurboTax and it was rejected as  2019 AGI did not match their records.

Tried again as I know the AGI was correct.

Turns out they have no record of 2019 being filed; however they managed to cash my check! I have ample documentation ( sent  return and payment: certified AND with return receipt and signature required)  that my return was received by them last year.

I am due an $1800 refund.

I have since mailed in my 2020 return  - again with tracking and know they have gotten it.

Last week I received the transcripts that show they cashed my check last year, but no return on file.

HELP! Any advice on how to get them to see/ find 2019 returns?

do I refile for 2019?

Are there complications in doing so - refiling - particularly now that I have submitted my 2020 return 3x (2x electronically through TT and 1x physically/mailed.

    Use AGI of 0 (zero).

Thanks for the reply,I really appreciate it.

So should I refile (mail) my return again, only this time with a AGI of zero so soon?

Will it matter that I had just refiled  it by mail with the AGI my 2019 actually had on it?

I do know the IRS can get very confused  very easily

and would like to not create more of a fiasco than this already is.

I did refile (by mail) my 2019 return today with all the documentation that shows they received my payment.

If you mail a 2020 return you do not need to put thee 2019 AGI on it. Never ever send in two tax returns to the IRS for the same year.
