If I listed myself as a dependent in previous years but no one claimed me, is there any way for me to get that tax return?

If you met the requirements to be claimed as a dependent by someone else, you cannot claim yourself even if the person who could have claimed you didn't claim you.

There are two questions.

1. Can someone else claim you?

You must answer yes if you can be claimed, even if the person who could claim you doesn't.

2. Will the person who can claim you actually claim you?

You can answer no if the person won't claim you, but the only thing this affects is your eligibilty for certain college credits if you earn more than $13,000 per year.

Since the tax reform act, there is very little different about being claimed or not being claimed as a dependent. Changing your answer from "yes I can be claimed" to "no, I can't be claimed" would only change certain college credits, your eligibility to contribute to an HSA, and certain stimulus payments over the last 2 years of the covid pandemic.
