Question

I received an IRS notice of error on the return I completed here. Is anyone available to review my return and spot what I did wrong?

The notice claimed my social security benefits were calculated incorrectly. A second notice claimed I contributed more to my IRAs than allowed.

1)  IRA contributions  you must have actual working income (w-2 or self employed net profit) before you can "contribute" to an IRA.   Transferring funds from one IRA, (or retirement account) to another IRA should not be entered as a "contribution" if that's what you did.

2)   SS.  Check line 6a and 6b of yore form 1040.  If you were living in the USA during 2025, there was a question after the main SSA-1099 entry that asked if you lived in certain foreign countries if you went thru too fast and answered "yes" when you should have said No...then that "yes" puts $0 on line 6b when it should not be.  Thus you may have to pay the IRS back for that mistaken entry.

Yes...TTX does need to clear up the software for that situation for SS in #2...to double check any YES answer and avoid many who made that mistake....either that or aet the "No" answer as the default.

@SteamTrain I quite agree. TurboTax needs to clear this up. There are too many taxpayers getting notices that they now owe or their refunds have been reduced because of this issue. I think the default should be "no" and a warning on the next page about Social Security being taxable unless the taxpayer was a resident of one of these countries, with a checkmark required by that country before the taxpayer can proceed to the next page. Not yes or no

Ohh Yeah!

A required checkmark beside the appropriate country might go a long way to resolving  Yes/No mis-entries.
