I prepared my 1040A with you and paid $29.99. I received another W-2 recently. How do I amend my return?

I prepared my 1040A through TurboTax and paid the required fee. I was to mail it out with payment to IRS, but have not done so. I recently received another W-2 from my employer.  How do I amend my tax return or edit my return?

If you have not mailed or efiled it yet you don't have to amend.  Just change your return and efile it or print again and mail it.

If you can't get back into your return, On the Tax Timeline page you have to select Add A State to get back into your return.

To successfully amend your return follow instructions below.

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account, if you're not already signed in.
  2. In the 2016 Tax Year section, click Amend (change) return
    • Note: If you see an orange Take me to my return button, you can't amend because you haven't filed yet. Just click or tap that button to open your return and make your changes.
  3. In the pop-up, click Amend using TurboTax Online
  4. Click Continue on the We'll help you change (amend) your return screen.
  5. Follow the on-screen directions to amend your return.
    • Don't worry if your refund drops to zero or does strange things while you are amending. Your calculations will come out correctly in the end.
  6. When you're done, we'll provide instructions to print and mail your amended return because an amended return can't be e-filed.
You can track your amended taxes with the IRS tracking tool. It takes the IRS around 16 weeks to process your amended taxes

If you have already filed your return you MUST WAIT until the IRS accepts your return.  And, if you are due a refund it is best to wait until you have actually received your refund.  Then, and only then you can prepare an amended return with the additional W-2s (forms) added.  The amended return MUST be PRINTED and MAILED --it CANNOT be e-filed.  An amended return generally can take 3-4 months for the IRS to process it --and the processing of amended returns does not start until later in the year.

If your return is rejected, you can add the additional W-2s (forms) at the same time as you make the corrections required by the IRS and re-submit your e-file.

Above all, DO NOT DO ANYTHING until your return is accepted or rejected.

When mailing a printed return it is always a good idea to go to the Post Office and mail it 'Certified' with 'Return Receipt'.  That way you will have proof that they received it and when it was received.
